Young and Brave

In first grade, my class split.

A "boys club" and a "girls club" sprouted at recess.

Everyone just accepted it.

Everyone... except a few of us.

I still remembered how much fun we had playing together in kindergarten.

Why should we stop just because someone said so?

So a classmate and I started a co-ed club.

Boys and girls. Playing together.

No rules. No sides.

The other clubs made fun of us.

Said we were “boy crazy” and “girl crazy.”

Said we were losers who couldn’t cut it.

It stung.

But it also made us even prouder.

We didn’t need their approval.

We knew we were right.

If Robert Fulghum was right when he wrote:

“All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten”

Then we learned something even bigger in first grade…

Be brave enough to stand up for what you know is right.
