What Unites These Contestants

They don’t know and you don’t know.  Where it will lead. Where it will end. You admire them for putting themselves out there and you admire their families and friends for helping nudge them onto the stage. They may get a fleeting few minutes or a string of performances over months.

When we see the few contestants transformed into megawatt artists we struggle to remember their awkward auditions and the songs they struggled with during the competition.  I just watched Carrie Underwood’s audition where she self-consciously held her intertwined hands fixed at her waist. We forget how the stars began, not to mention the many talented singers who didn’t win.

Yet all of the contestants push past their fears, their doubts, their worries.  They draw on their dreams.  They lean on love.  They fixate on dazzling futures.

Bravery unites every American Idol contestant.   They show up.  They don’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect plan.  Bravery doesn’t take perfection – it takes action.

What stage do you need to step on to – at work or in life?  When you do, will you be brave?
