What I Learned About Bravery from Crime Victims

Bravery doesn't always begin with you.
Sometimes, it begins with someone standing beside you.

As a federal prosecutor, I spent years in courtrooms handling high-stakes cases.

But some of the bravest people I met weren't lawyers or judges...
They were victims.

Many were testifying for the first time.
Facing the person who hurt them.
Sharing their story.

It wasn't easy.

But when they felt seen, supported, and believed in, something changed.

They found the strength to speak.
Not because I told them to but because they had someone walking with them.

I've never forgotten that.

Bravery isn't always loud.
It's not always about bold action.
Sometimes, it's about helping someone else take their first step forward.

That's what leadership is.
Not just standing up yourself but helping others stand up.
