Bravery Does Your Best Work
If you can't do your best work, you shouldn't do the work at all.
A while back, I was asked to help a company manage a high-stakes crisis overseas.
We had a trusted colleague on the ground, someone who understood the local landscape, culture, and media. The kind of expert you want in your corner when things are moving fast.
But the client refused to bring her in.
No clear explanation. Just resistance.
We moved forward without her.
And while we did the best we could under the circumstances, I knew we weren't bringing everything we had to the table.
Not because we weren't willing...but because we weren't allowed to.
Looking back, the brave thing would've been to say no.
To explain that we couldn't deliver the caliber of work we're known for under those constraints.
To walk away even if it meant disappointing the client or losing the business.
That's a hard call to make. But sometimes, it's the right one.
Because if you're compromising your standards to stay in the room, you're not leading.
